Role Overview
Sumter Methodist Church (SMC) is seeking dependable, nurturing nursery staff to care for children with warmth, attentiveness, and respect. This role supports children and families during Sunday Services and special events and reports to the Director of Family Ministries and the Staff Parish Relations Committee.
Responsibilities
- Supervise children — Provide attentive care for infants and young children throughout each scheduled shift.
- Create a nurturing environment — Comfort children, respond to their individual needs, and encourage age-appropriate play and interaction.
- Follow safety procedures — Consistently use the nursery’s check-in, sign-in, sign-out, identification, emergency, and incident-reporting procedures.
- Communicate clearly — Share relevant updates with parents and guardians, and communicate promptly with church leaders.
- Maintain cleanliness — Keep toys, surfaces, supplies, and the nursery area clean, organized, and ready for the next group of children.
- Support the church community — Model kindness, respect, and hospitality for children, families, volunteers, and fellow staff members.
Qualifications
- Child-care experience — Experience caring for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, or young children in a home, church, school, or community setting.
- Reliability — Dependable attendance, punctuality, and willingness to communicate promptly about schedule changes.
- Must be available to work Sunday mornings.
- Patience and warmth — A calm, compassionate approach to children with different needs, ages, and personalities.
- Communication — Clear, respectful communication with children, parents and guardians, volunteers, and church leadership.
- Commitment to child safety — Willingness to follow all safeguarding, supervision, check-in, hygiene, and emergency procedures required by SMC.
